This two-hour hybrid event will offer an introduction to fusion, a broad view of careers in the field, as well as the trajectory of the industry. There will be a panel of industry experts, a Q&A session, and an opportunity for networking afterwards.
(Fusion Energy Week is May 6-10, but our pre-event will be held on April 22nd due to finals week.)
- Jane Hotchkiss President, Energy for the Common Good (Moderator)
- Royce W. James, Ph.D., Captain, USCG
- Dr. Peter Lemaire, Professor, Department Chair, Physics & Engineering Physics, Central Connecticut State University

COP28 Panel: Framing fusion regulations to stimulate acceptance, diversity, and equity in early fusion markets
Monday, December 6, 2023
10:00-11:00 AM EDT
The fusion sector is already transforming our energy landscape, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The sooner we establish agreement on its regulatory framework, the faster commercial fusion will join all renewable energy, storage, and grid technologies addressing the climate crisis. The urgent need for scaling fusion manufacturing capacity now highlights the importance of a robust public health and safety framework to ensure transparent and climate neutral supply chains.
- Moderator: Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger, Climate Law and Governance Initiative, Centre for International Sustainable Development Law
- Randolph Bell, Head of International Government Affairs, Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS)
- Jane Hotchkiss, President, Energy for the Common Good
- Michel Laberge, Founder and Chief Science Officer, General Fusion
- Amy Roma, Partner and the Global Energy Practice Leader, Hogan Lovells
COP28 Panel: Developing Regulatory Paths for Safe, Equitable, & Rapid Fusion Energy Deployment
December 5, 2023
11:30 AM – 12:40 PM GST
Middlesex University Dubai, Marrakesh Room
Block 16 Knowledge Park Dubai United Arab Emirates
Part of Climate Law and Governance Day (CLGD) 2023. CLDG2023 builds on a series of special events co-hosted by key partners from the Climate Law and Governance Initiative (CLGI) during the UNFCCC climate conferences since the 2005 MOP1/COP11 in Montreal, Canada to mobilise the international law and governance community to help implement the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement in the context of the global Sustainable Development Goals. This will be their first event addressing fusion-related issues. The event will be both in person and livestreamed; organizers will be reaching out to over 14,400 past participants and others in 171 countries to promote these events.
Focus Questions: Climate change requires big solutions which can benefit all – fusion is such a solution. The urgent need for scaling fusion manufacturing capacity now highlights the importance of a robust public health and safety framework to ensure transparent and climate neutral supply chains. What do we need now in order to create safeguards across a wide spectrum of technologies? How do we enable these commercializing technologies to benefit with parity from the start? Can one set of regulations apply to all?
- Moderator: Jane Hotchkiss, President, Energy for the Common Good
- Thomas Davis, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Oxford Sigma
- Jim McNiel, Global Chief Marketing Officer, TAE Technologies
- Humphrey Mrema, Chairman at Youth Survival Organization
- Andrew Proffitt, Regulatory Specialist, Helion Energy
Putting SVB into perspective: What are the paths forward, and possible domino effects
The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) sent shockwaves across the venture capital and private equity community on Friday, with other market knock-on effects. We know that many fusion start-ups had accounts at SVB. Thus, we have invited our strategic partner, Tourmaline Group to provide some background and the possible paths forward.
- Bianca Taylor is Partner at Tourmaline Group, a consultancy working at the nexus of climate, policy, and finance.
- Barbara Matthews is Founder of BCM Strategies a data company that helps portfolio managers and advocates make faster data-driven decisions regarding public policy trajectories.
